Sticking to your Convictions

GIVE.  But don’t allow yourself to be used.

LOVE.  But don’t allow your heart to be abused.

TRUST.  But don’t be naive.

LISTEN.  But don’t lose your own voice.

Q-Does your family have a motto?

Back Door

A-Other than the Golden Rule (“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”), we teach and practice how vital it is to have a “back door” in ANY and ALL situations. If you always have an alternate plan in mind, then you’ll be better able to handle any unfavorable situation that may occur. Hope for the best, but ALWAYS plan for the worst; that’s our motto!

How about YOU? Does your family have a motto?

How to Fix Ingrown Toenails for Good

With summer being in full swing, the days getting hotter as each week passes, and the clothes shedding and getting skimpier each day, my attention has been drawn to feet. Yes, you heard me right, feet! Everywhere you look, you see someone in flops, with toes exposed to the world. You can tell A LOT about a person by their feet believe it or not. Do they have years worth of skin/callus accumulation or are they well maintained? Are their nails trimmed and manicured, or did they bypass grooming that area all together? Some people actually go overboard in the cutting department and end up doing more harm than good.

Toes in the Sand...

The topic that I have chosen to discuss today is Ingrown Toenails. Thousands of people suffer from this painful and unattractive condition, but 9 times out of 10, THEY are the root cause of the problem! Years ago, I spent SO much time “maintaining” my nails that I caused my toenails to become ingrown. I had a tool that would scrape any trapped debris out from underneath the nail, and I actually became a bit obsessive with it. I always went WAY too far, and ended up causing the surrounding skin to bleed and, over time, flair up with gooey infection. I jacked them up SO bad, I wouldn’t dare slide on a pair of flip flops!

One day my boyfriend (husband now) noticed them and told me to quit using that stupid scraper and let the nail grow beyond the end of the toe; not much…just a bit. From that day on (once the infection healed) I have not had any problems. I still have my scraper, but have learned self control; thank goodness!

Several co-workers have asked my advice on the topic, and once they followed this one simple step…

Let the Nail Grow and LEAVE it Alone!!!

their problems disappeared. A few people have more extreme cases and should discuss it with their physician, but for the masses, this one tip WILL work. I wish that I could provide you with a before and after comparison, but when I was going through it, the last thing pointed towards my toes was a camera; sorry.

If you are suffering with ingrown toenails, these bulleted points should aid in some relief:

  • Soak daily in a hot, Epsom salt foot bath
  • Boil out the infection with Hydrogen Peroxide and then sterilize with Rubbing Alcohol
  • Before bed, pack the wound with medicated Neosporin or the round jar of Carmex-cover with a band aid and thoroughly clean the area when you wake

I’m sure there are a million other things that you could do to provide relief, but these 3 tips are what my brainstorming session provided.

Have you ever suffered the pain and embarrassment of Ingrown Toenails? Do you have any additional tips, tricks, or sources of relief to add to the list? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below…

Tell All Tuesday Series: Jealousy

Q-Are you jealous?

Tell All Tuesday Series...

A-Not anymore, but back in the day, it was OFF the chain!  In between my fierce temper and my jealous streak, you had better watch out; it was BAD!  People did NOT want to cross me, as I was ready to throw down at a moment’s notice.

When I became a mother though, I toned down tremendously, and then once my husband and I hooked up (and I felt secure in our relationship) that was all she wrote.  Life’s WAY too short to get riled up all the time!  If your partner is going to screw around on you or your BFF would rather spend their days/nights with someone else, what good is your harping going to do?  If anything, it will only speed up the process and drive them into someone else’s arms faster.  So not ONLY do you ultimately lose out, but you risk developing some big time health issues.

Take a damn chill pill and take the time to love yourself first.  Your self-love will radiate onto others, and they will flock to you, and if they don’t, you REALLY didn’t need them in your life in the first place.  Sometimes life does you a favor and keeps the toxic people at bay for us.

Now, it’s your turn…are YOU jealous?

A Little Pep Talk

I had a very interesting conversation with a co-worker/dear friend this morning. She feels that I am lacking confidence in my abilities, and that I am allowing outside influences to delay my progression within my business. While I have an overstuffed idea bank and a TON of projects in the works, she feels that I’m not utilizing my potential to its fullest capacity. She said that I am extremely talented, and that it’s just a matter of time until I am successful, but that I need to up my game.

Constructive Criticism

I’m SO glad that I am able to acknowledge and appreciate constructive criticism!

As much as I hate to admit it, she has me pegged. I decided this year that I am going to start making new videos for my YouTube channel, but I have had some difficulties wrapping my mind around which topics to cover (any ideas or requests?). Plus, every time I bust out the video camera, I just feel like an absolute doofus talking to myself; I suppose that it’s time to get over that stigma. I also am horrible about allowing my loved ones to pull at me, which ultimately cause me to get behind in my projects. I’m still working on obtaining that “Happy Balance” between my home life and my work life after my exhausting day job ends. It seems that every time I turn around, I’m expected to cook or run out and get food (in amongst all of the errands, appointments, and “Mom, I need a ride.” times). I feel like we’re ALWAYS eating!

I have decided that this year I am committing myself to my book (the one that discusses my 5 year plan), and while I’m pouring a lot of time and energy into not only writing it, but putting together all of the little extras that will accompany it, my girlfriend feels that I need to keep my other pieces heading out the door as well. So, I guess that I need to take a step back, finish up these other projects that are internally tugging at me and get them listed in my shop, so I can free up my mind to focus on the “BIG PROJECT” that I have in the works.

I’ve been saying since late last year, that 2016 is going to be my year, and while I have a lot of personal battles that I intend to finalize, in addition to (hopefully) purchasing my first home, and getting this book into the hands of those that desperately need it, these past couple of months have thrown curve balls at every turn. But, things always seem to get more complicated right before the forces align and things work out the way that they’re intended to. My stubborn streak and my perseverance will ensure that I refuse to accept defeat, now that I am SO close to achieving my dreams. If I can tough out these last several hurdles, pardon the pun, I’ll be shitting in tall cotton!

I hope that you have a fantastic weekend!

Bite Your Tongue!

I am about to divulge in you, the most valuable piece of relationship advice that you will ever receive. Are you sitting down?

Hush Now

When you find yourself in a serious relationship, always make sure to pick and choose your battles. That doesn’t mean pick up your arms and head out to the battlefield, that means that when you find yourself in a disagreement with your partner, make a conscious and well thought out decision as to whether or not this particular topic is WORTH fighting over. There are a multitude of topics worth going tooth and nail for, but the others are just pointless. To fight over these is unproductive, and will only result in a bunch of unnecessary hurt feelings.

If you find that this newest argument isn’t worth the time it would take to fight over, then bite your damn tongue; literally if that’s what it takes! Do whatever you’ve got to do, but make sure that you don’t stoop down to their level. Hold your cards and keep them close. You may find that you’ll need that ammunition down the road.

Well, there you go; my relationship advice for the week. Do YOU have any advice that you would like to add?

How to create your VERY OWN Business Binder

Hey Guys! Are you ready to learn how I manage to keep all of my ducks in a row???

My Binder 1

I am SO excited to finally be sharing with you how I created my Business Binder! I’ve mentioned several times in the past how much this book has been a life saver for me, and I’m hoping that it can become just as valuable for you! If you have any additional questions, please shoot them my way. I love to help out in any way that I can!

During the “research” phase of my blog, I ran across a post talking about how important it was to create a “Blog Binder.” Not only does it keep your thought process organized, but it also allows you to stay ahead of the game. It was advised to have at least 2-3 months worth of material available at ALL times to prevent scrambling at that very last second to get your post put together. I implemented that in the beginning, but VERY quickly went through my material. I now try to work on posts 1-2 weeks in advance, and this works out well for me. But, with all things, there are just some posts which end up taking a bit longer. I actually have 2 posts that I have been putting together for the past several months; looking forward to their release! So, let’s get to the meat of the matter….

What is a “Blog/Business Binder,” and what do you need to make one? Well, the binder is a compilation of all things blog/business related. I have my post ideas, my research, ideas for my creations, a calendar filled with posts that I want to release on certain days, and so on. I will give you a breakdown of mine a little further down, so don’t go anywhere just yet.

When it comes to creating one, you can make it as “inexpensive” or “elaborate” as you choose. Since money was tight when I first put mine together, I went down the cheap route. I rummaged through my supplies and found a 1 inch binder, some white copy paper, and a hole punch. I then designed my own calendar, punched holes in all the pages, and secured them all inside. I also tried out the color-coded post-it notes, but passed on those pretty quickly. Basically, you choose several different colors/patterns and those will represent the different topics/categories that you will write about. That way, at a glance, you can see whether you have a good “balance” for your posting schedule. Fantastic concept, but a bit more work than I needed in my life.

My Binder 2

While a lot of people choose to use colored markers/sharpies to create a fun and colorful binder, I prefer having the option to erase, as my mind changes so often. I can’t tell you how many times I have had to throw my post ideas back onto the idea list, because one, I just didn’t have the time to devote to that particular topic, or two, because I just wasn’t feeling it. It’s so much easier just to re-write and erase as opposed to filling in a new calendar. But, as the old saying goes, “whatever floats your boat.”

In my post, Implementing 5 Changes for a Successful Year, I stated that I have decided on a new direction for my blog, as well as for my Etsy shop. I am in Year 3 of my 5 Year Plan, and the time has come to shake things up a bit! I have been watching a TON of marketing videos, and have decided that I need to be a bit more strategic in my planning. In saying this, I am beginning to realize that it’s about time to invest in a larger binder. That 1 inch just doesn’t seem to be cutting it anymore! My ideas are LITERALLY busting at the seams

My Binder 3

A few weeks back I decided to bite the bullet and re-organize my binder, and while I liked the new changes, it still just wasn’t quite right. Thus, I decided to change things up yet again. While my Etsy shop and my blog are certainly 2 separate entities, when it comes down to it, they are really one in the same, as they work hand in hand towards the same ultimate goal. So, I had to figure out a way to join the two within my binder. I put a lot of thought into it, and the breakdown below is what I came up with.

I still find myself struggling to remember where I have put everything, but in time, I believe that this new configuration will make my business run a bit more efficiently.

  • Krista Kemp Designs-My creations-packaging ideas-shopping wish list-chart of my goals and deadlines
  • From Food Stamps to a Future-My mission statement-the direction that I want to take my blog-chart of my goals and deadlines

Idea Bank:
My creation ideas broken down by category-future product lines-possible post ideas-upcoming events and collaborations

  • Blog Editorial Calendar-my post lineup-month at a glance
  • Product Launch Schedule-a list of each item in my newest product line (broken down by color, pattern, and price), my anticipated launch date, and a checklist for my promotion schedule
  • My Social Media Calendar-Sucking miserably in this area!!! Need to get more involved. Each platform is broken down by section, and will allow me to fill in what type of post/promotion/video I will include at each destination
  • Local Selling and Promotion-a “4 month at a glance” breakdown of what I’ve got going on around town; from advertising my shop and blog, to teaching classes, to selling creations at different venues; planning to add some local media advertisement to that list.

Food for Thought:
Upcoming Events (in person and online)-my TO DO checklist

Research and Marketing Strategies:
A safe place for all of my super important notes-a vault of knowledge for numerous upcoming adventures

So, there you have it. Pretty simple concept, huh?! If you have a blog/business/editorial calendar/binder, I would LOVE to hear how YOU have it organized!
