How/When/Why I decided to start my own Business

I have always had a “Big Imagination” as my mother would surely attest to, and I have always experienced  what I like to call “Peter Pan Syndrome.”  I just never wanted to grow up.  When asked what I wanted to be when I got older, I would rattle off a whole slew of career titles and everyone’s response to me was that I had to pick just one.  I have never approved of their analysis which has left me quite confused over the years.  So, after years of contemplation, I have finally figured out how I can obtain each and every job title that I have ever wanted to hold.  I am super proud to announce that my adventure has already begun.  My hard work, determination, and perseverance will ensure that I reach every goal that I want, scratch that, NEED to accomplish in life, and come hell or high water, I am going to make it happen!  I have my unwavering support unit cheering me along with each step that I take.  I WILL obtain my goals or die trying.

One trait that I honestly inherited from those good ole’ family genes was my stubbornness, and I am going to use it to push me past each hurdle that I face.  Some people encourage you, but deep down they want to see you fail so they can feel better about themselves.  I’m not going to give them that satisfaction.  If nothing else, I will use that as the fire under my ass, that extra push that gets me to where I can knock down the walls of impossibility.  I am a diamond in the rough, and I’m breaking my shell so others can see how beautiful I shine.  This life was never intended for the weak of heart.

Growing Up

Baby Krista

I was raised in a family where children were meant to be seen and not heard.  Sound familiar to anyone?  To keep her babies content, my mother always made sure to supply my sister and I with little art projects that would keep our fingers busy and our mouths quiet.  We were constantly given color specified art sets to prevent us from arguing over who’s was who’s.  My sets were red, and my sister’s were blue (if memory serves, that was ages ago after all).  We got markers, coloring books, paint sets, glitter, glue, stickers, you name it, we had it.  So, needless to say my love for arts and crafts began at a very early age.

Due to our upbringing and our white carpets, my sister and I were taught to keep everything nice and tidy while we were in our creative modes.  We even had to put one item away before we could get out another.  Try doing mixed media back in those days, right?!  I guess that is how I am able to do 99% of my creations from my bed.  May as well be comfy while my hands do what they were created to do, right?

My 5 Year Plan

My 5 year plan was set into motion on Christmas day in 2012.  I realized that my life had grown stagnate, that there was nothing in my future career path to look forward to, and I concluded that  it was time, once again, to re-invent myself and our way of life.    I figured that since the world hadn’t ended on my birthday (12/21/12), that it was time for a new start and a fresh set of goals to get me to where I wanted to be.  I have written a book about my process and how it all came to be, and am anxiously awaiting its future publication.  Of course, if I cannot locate the “right” publisher, I may end up turning it into an e-book.  This book outlines how I wound up in the situation that I found myself in, and how I came to peace with my past so that I could make positive strides towards the future that I wanted to be in.  The process took many years for me to get through, but the trip has been well worth it.  I now have a clear set of goals that are obtainable which will result in a stimulating and satisfying existence.  I now look forward to the next phase in life.

I have always been a craft enthusiast, and have spent more hours than I care to share browsing the aisles of any craft store that I could find.  I have been compiling my art supply stock over the years, and was beginning to look like a craft hoarder, though I did manage to keep it organized.  I had been contemplating creating/selling my crafts since 2007, but had always held off because the thought of sitting at craft shows all day would have been like a death sentence for me.  But now, due to technological advances, I can share and sell my creations with the world without ever having to leave home.

During my research I discovered that there were a multitude of craft sites that catered to people like myself.  I also found that the marketing possibilities were endless.  I decided at that moment to put my best foot forward and take a chance on a new future.  Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?!

Ready for Business

I got busy compiling enough items to stock my storefront, and went to work establishing a following.  I opened my shop on Etsy September 1, 2014, and to date have made 70 + sales and have had a multitude of custom inquiries.  Doesn’t sound like much, but I am quite pleased with my progression.  Starting any business takes time, especially online, as people are weary of making business transactions with people who are just starting out.  It is only a matter of time before business picks up.  My shop receives a good share of views each and every day, and people “favorite” my items and my shop every several days.  The future is bright!

Some of My Career goals include:

  • Growing my Etsy Business
  • Creating a blog where others can become inspired, learn a little somethin’-somethin’, and establish a support group with others
  • Become a published author, engage with others at book signings, and eventually make my debut on a talk show
  • I want to spend 2 years as a motivational speaker.  If I am able to travel doing this, I want to hit every thrift store along the way
  • I eventually want to start my own organization to help single mothers and their families.  A lot of people are able to get government assistance, but there are those who are out there busting their butts trying to provide a better future for their family, only to be told that they make too much money and that they aren’t eligible to get any help from the state.  These folks oftentimes find themselves in predicaments, and realize it is next to impossible to find anyone out in this big world that is willing to help out.  I want to make it possible for them to get the things that they need.  For instance: My children slept on air mattresses for 3 years because I couldn’t afford beds.  ‘Nuff said!
  • When planning out which goals to set, I started a bucket list.  As most of you know this is a list of activities that you want to engage in before you die.  My Bucket List is MASSIVE!  I don’t think I have enough years left in this life to cross off everything on my list, but I’m ready to get started…

When thinking of my goals, failure is not an option.  I refuse to give up on my dreams until I reach my destination.  Hard work and determination are assets that I possess that I plan to utilize to their fullest potential.  I know that if I can go from where I was, to where I am now, to where I will be in my future, that you are just as capable as I am.  As the pun goes, “If I can do it, you can do it!”  NEVER give up on yourself!

What is my style?

Well, my creative heart’s desire revolves around vintage/retro and boho styles.  I honestly believe that I was born in the wrong era.  The styles, the colors, the designs; they place an excitement in me that words could never express.  They entice a feeling in me of finally being home and where I belong.  I am a true hippie chic at heart.

People who inspire me and my creative outlet include:

  • Tim Burton-absolute mastermind!  I love his imagination and the color usage in his films.   Eccentricity has always appealed to my tastes.
  • Vicky Papaioannou-Discovered this talented woman on YouTube.  She specializes in creative art journals and card making.  She has been such an inspiration to me.
  • Tim Holtz-I adore his product line!  Such great stuff!  I buy something new every time I hit the craft store.  I just found out he has a new fabric line.  I’ll have to stock up!
  • Marjie Kemper-I recently discovered this amazing woman on Pinterest.  She is so talented and her use of vibrant colors in her art work speaks to my soul.
  • Amanda Louise Spayd-Her line of Dust Bunnies is absolutely breathtaking!  I read her bio and realized that she is the same age as I am.  She has really made a name for herself, and she has become such an inspiration to me.
  • Chris Ryniak-I discovered his creations on Pinterest.  His talent astounds me!  I found his blog online, and read some of his posts.  He stories are quite compelling.

How I squeeze in craft time

I work full-time as a Preschool teacher as I mentioned in my Bio.  Luckily, I am able to utilize nap time (on occasion) into mini-crafting sessions.  Several items in my shop were prepped/created during nap time.  I carry around a lot of my projects, as I oftentimes find myself with dead moments waiting for the kids, waiting for doctors, whatever the case may be.  I cannot fathom wasting a moment, when I could use that time to be productive.  Is my workaholic status apparent yet?  There are times that I get so involved in my work that I forget to eat or sleep.  Oops!

I am currently working on :

  • My Daisy Man (he was dreamt up/drawn when I was 13)
  • I have several dioramas that I am working on (They were inspired by books/movies/music that I enjoy)
  • Shabby Chic Bird in Nest
  • Papier Mache Head

My brain in overloaded with future project ideas and my business binder is filled to the brim and broken down into categories.  I have more ideas than time it seems.  One day…

Thank you so much for this post !! You made me realize without a plan in writing, I have no goals to shoot for. I am working now on my plan for the next ten years , so I have clearly defined goals I plan to meet and hopefully exceed !!
I think many times, those of us who craft at home, forget we need to do what big companies do. Have a mission statement, and clearly defined business goals. I have never really done that .
Thanks for lighting a fire under me, I am exicted to get my lists together, and have already started I was so excited I had to get out paper and pen right away !! I cannot wait to watch where this takes me in the coming years. It is the one thing I have never done in 25 years of working at home, and that could be why I have not done as well as I would have liked over the years.
I plan to change that and I was already fired up and working hard, but having this plan will really focus me, so thanks again, I am sure you will help a lot of people with this post !!!

You are most welcome! I am SO proud of you! It is super important to have clearly defined goals, and it helps keep you on track. Better than that, it gives you something fantastic to works towards. I know that great success will come to you now that you have re-evaluated your game plan. have an Etsy/blog editorial calendar that I tote around with me. I have my goals, plans, ideas, research, and future posts organized within. It has been a life saver for me.

I am actually putting together an eBook about my 5 year plan. Have been compiling ideas for years, and have realized that I need to quit dragging my feet. It talks about how my my mid-life crisis at 26 began the path that I am now on. The steps that I went through, the self analysis that took place, and the origin of my chosen career path. It is a book focusing on what steps need to be taken in following your dreams. If I can do it with all that I have had on my plate over the years, then anyone is capable of doing it. It will be packed full of inspiration, and the kit that will accompany it will have a follow along journal for my readers. I am super excited to see it completed. I know that it will be a must have for millions!

Thank you so much for sharing your story with me! It has been the highlight of my crazy day! To you and each of your endeavors! I look forward to seeing your success!

I will be announcing its release date on my blog, and would love for you to be the first in line. Still have a bit left to finish. I will eventually have it for sale in my etsy shop. I plan to sell it as an eBook (PDF download), but will also offer the kit which will include the eBook. The kit is the better option. It’s a must have! I plan to take it to the Ellen show. Big plans girl! Hoping to one day get noticed by a publisher. Haven’t had much luck yet. I have 2 children’s books completed, another planned (need an illustrator), have 2 eBooks that I’m hoping to have completed and on sale over on Etsy this weekend (have a part 2 in the works) as well as a party planner guide for this weekend. I have an accordion folder filled with books I have started and ideas for others. Not to mention my auto-biography. My mom has been working on hers, and my grandmother wrote hers 26 years ago. I want to put the three together and make a 3 generation auto-biography. I hope that you are able to finish your how to soon. I would love to know more about it! I am so glad that we came into each other’s lives. Great minds think alike, and it is best to surround yourself with like-minded individuals. Thank you for everything! You have made my day!☺️

How funny , I have piles of poetry I have written and two novels I started and never finished , very early into them , raising four kids had a lot to do with it !! As I know you understand !! Grandkids have not been any easier on my goals , lots of grandma day care !! Not for pay either , lol !!
It is a how to have a good yard sale book ! We have had somewhere between forty to fifty sales in our almost 34 years of marriage and we have attended more than a thousand yard sales !! We raised our kids on yard sale clothes and we were antique dealers for a while too , so lots of yard sale shopping !! We talked about writing the book for years and I have been working on it on and off for around ten years ! He has a lot of input but I do the actual writing !!
The kit sounds interesting , count me in !! I cannot wait to read it and I love all your projects !! How wonderful to combine all your stories together !! Three generations !! Another one I want to buy !! I think you have some exciting goals and I think Ellen is a great one for you !! If you believe it you can live it !! I am a firm believer in the power of our thoughts !! I think your book will be perfect for her show !! She loves stories like yours !! Maybe I can get a local morning show or a women’s magazine article !! Lol !! You opened me up to dreaming and I am excited !! You start to forget how to dream when you are a stay at home mom/ grandma for 30 years ! I met you as I am starting to open myself to it again !! Your post was so huge to me , you have no idea !!
You made my day as well !! Maybe we can help each other to keep dreaming big , and more importantly , make those dreams reality !!

I hear ya girl! Being a mommy and grandma always gets in the way. I’ve got 4 children, one granddaughter, and a grandson on the way. I can totally relate! I think you need to dig in your collection and see what’s worth finishing. I guarantee you’re sitting on a gold mine! You already have the shop to support it, and the blog followers to share it with. Go for it!

I think that your how to idea is amazing, and I feel that there is a market for it right now. People are super cautious with their money, and are constantly looking for a quick way to make a buck. I’ve had quite a few sales, and my dad lived and breathed them! Yard/garage sales, antiques, flea markets, estate sales. He was all about maximizing his profit! I’m not as good with bartering as he is though. Definitely get that book finished. You will be so glad that you did!

My kit will include a lot of fun items. I’m excited to start putting it all together. I’m glad that you like my creations. That means a lot to me! I love your creations as well! Especially the wine charms…too cute!!! The auto-biography will take a little longer to complete, but it will definitely be a best seller! It’s funny that you mention the power of thought…I have been putting together a post about just that. I believe in it whole heartedly! Yeah, I’m gonna start advertising locally…a news program, a radio station or two, then I’m going to send a kit to the Ellen show. Was thinking of sending one to Oprah’s book club as well. My husband actually went to school with her. I think that you could promote your how to in a million and one places. Magazines, local papers, Pinterest, radio and television. I guarantee there is a web site out there that caters to your topic as well. I am so glad that I have re-energized you. Sometimes it only takes a small push in the right direction. My goal in life is to help others, and I am so fortunate to be able to interact with others through my blog!

We are keeping the dream alive, and we WILL be successful…you watch! Shout out anytime. I’m always here to bounce ideas off of. Keep it real sister! 😄

I hear ya girl! I’ve only been successful with one canvas so far. Most of my sales have come from smaller, common items. I just continue to make what I get a hankering to take on. There is a customer for everything, it’s just a matter of them running across your shop. Keep your spirits high… You have great work!
