I am a Jane of all trades, and a master to none…
Okay, so who is this Krista and what makes her tick?
Well, my name is Krista Kemp, and I am 35 years old. I have 4 children (2 boys and 2 girls), and a granddaughter. I am a writer, a crafter, a college educated and self-taught computer geek, a world traveler, a devoted daughter, a sister to two, an aunt, a loving and devoted wife, a doctor, a cheer mom, a chauffeur, an entrepreneur, a teacher, a chef, a maid, a seamstress, a photographer, a workaholic, a VERY busy woman to say the least. My passion is creating, and I do it every chance that I get! My ultimate goal is to work from home doing what I love.
A Little About What I Do
I started working in childcare 10 years ago. The hours were flexible, I was able to spend lots of time with my children, as well as go to school in between my 2 shifts. 4 years ago I received my degree in Computer Science, but for some reason I am still working as a Preschool Teacher?! I guess it could be the 6-2 shift that I now have, although I am NOT a morning person. You just can’t beat getting out of work at 2! Gives you the time for all those “necessary” appointments your kiddos just can’t miss, you know, Doctors, Dentists, Orthodontist. I love the people that I work with, I know the job and can do it with my eyes closed, and SOMETIMES I like the kids. You know, when they’re not keeping me sick and causing migraines! For some strange reason those little guys just cannot figure out how to blow their nose or wash their hands. YUCK!!!
Outside of my “normal” job and my motherly and wifely obligations, I spend my time creating. I used to do it for the pure pleasure of it, until I realized that was what I wanted to do with my life. I now have my own Etsy shop, Krista Kemp Designs, and this wonderful blog here. I would like to eventually spend my days and nights writing and creating, AND here’s the kicker, make a living from it. I fantasize about living in my beautiful beach-side condo one day, tapping away on my laptop. When the children leave the nest, I would like to have my own little craft cottage that can stay a creative mess. Loft up top for sleeping, the rest of the cottage cluttered with art supplies. Ahhh…What a wonderful world that will be!
A Little Tidbit About My Past
Eleven years ago I left my home in Europe and moved back to the states. I just could not subject myself or my little ones to that volatile atmosphere any longer. I divorced my abusive-negligent-alcoholic husband, and embraced the new start that I had been blessed with. I spent a good many years as a single mommy to my 3 children doing the very best that I could. Life was good, but difficult as always when forced to live paycheck to paycheck. When I had finally given up on finding my “Prince Charming,” he made his dramatic appearance into my life. We have now been married for 2 years. Not only am I married to my best friend, but I gained a daughter and a beautiful granddaughter who captures my heart in the deal. Life is still difficult from time to time, but our family is now complete. I cannot imagine spending my life in any other way.
This is my beautiful family:
I have been enjoying crafts since before I could even walk, and it has carried on throughout my life. Not only is it a hobby, but it is my life’s passion, or obsession if you will. There are 2 musts in my life, writing and creating. I feel most alive when I am engaging in these activities.
Of course I have a massive craft collection consisting of just about anything that you could imagine. Scrapbook Paper, Stickers, Stamps, Stencils, Paints, Canvas, Embellishments, Watch Gears, Yarn, Fabric, Clay, Beads, Wire, Tools, etc., etc., etc. I LOVE to go junkin’ every chance that I get, so I have quite an extensive collection of oddball pieces that I can eventually upcycle into new beautiful pieces of art.
What do I do in my spare time?
Well, my natural witty response to that would of course be, “What spare time?!” Although I am a super busy girl, there are moments where I can slip away into my version of an Oasis. My all-time favorite past time is to curl up in bed with my hubby with a good movie and work on my crafts. I also enjoy soaking in a hot bubble bath after a long frustrating day at work and write. I always do my best writing and thinking in the bathroom, but mum’s the word on that one. That’s our little secret. In addition to these activities, I enjoy reading, but most of all sleeping. I NEVER get enough sleep! My husband is convinced that I have a sleeping disorder. One of these days I am going to get a hotel room and sleep until I cannot sleep any longer. Thank you for the tip Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.
Due to having young children and limited expendable income, I got used to entertaining myself at home. I am an avid movie buff, and my VHS/DVD collection would put a movie store to shame. My all time favorites include, The Count of Monte Cristo, Elizabeth, and the cult classic Harold and Maude. I love music, and have quite a collection there as well. I enjoy a lot of rock like Nine Inch Nails, Linkin Park, 30 Seconds to Mars, artists like Evanescence, Portishead, and The Gorillaz, but I especially love classic rock. Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Led Zepplin… One CD that I play constantly is Pink Floyd’s The Wall.
My all time favorite author is none other than Mr. Stephen King, the King of Horror himself. I have learned SO much from this man, and I read everything of his that I can get my hands on. He is a prodigy in his craft, and his stories will live on through the ages inspiring others and frightening the rest.
At the age of 11, I received an electronic typewriter for Christmas. I was SO excited! I sat down and started tapping away stories from my life, only to discover that I just didn’t have that much to say. The desire to write my auto-biography has never slipped away, and a few years back I began again, this time on my laptop. Oh, what a little bit of time will change! I have SO many stories to share now, by the time I’m done, my life story will look like the “Dark Tower” series by Stephen King!
So, in case you haven’t noticed by now, I am a writer. I have 2 children’s books completed, one of which was inspired by my granddaughter, as well as a book about my 5 year plan which is close to completion. Just waiting for the right publisher to make an appearance in my life. I have also written 2 e-books. My cookbook, “52 Easy Meals for Busy (Single) Moms on a Budget” can be found at my Etsy shop, and “10 Steps on How to Manage Your Busy Life” can be downloaded for FREE by joining the club here on my blog. My 5 year plan is what inspired the opening of my Etsy shop, and the turning point in what I now call my reality. To read more about my 5 year plan click here.
I love to travel, and have done my fair share over the years. I have visited the majority of the 50 states and have visited 2 different countries. Plans and itinararies were made for 7 other countries (trips) but due to the events of 9/11, those plans were cancelled. Over the past 11 years, my traveling has taken a dramatic halt, and I’m itching and raring to go! I feel like a sitting duck and it’s driving me insane! There are SO many more places left to explore, and I refuse to die until I mark them off my list.
