How to Apply for a College Grant

After leaving my controlling husband, moving back home from Europe, and restarting my life in Tennessee, I decided that it was high time I continue my education. It was something that I needed to do, for me. I had just found out that I was eligible for assistance from the government, so I began questioning everyone that I came across about how I could apply for a college grant. I assumed that since these folks dealt with all of these different programs that help people like me, then they would have the answers. Boy was I mistaken! They were about as knowledgeable as a twig.

Continuing Education

I didn’t have the internet at home, and at that time, I was unaware that the public library offered internet services for free. So, I just kept asking around. Finally, after about a year and a half, I ran across a wonderful woman named Jean. She gave me a pamphlet that showed me, step by step, how to apply for a college grant through FAFSA. The sky opened up and the birds rejoiced! I was finally going to be able to make my dream of going to college come true.

I went through the process, was accepted, and set forth to register for my first semester. My major began in dental hygiene, then changed to business, and finally turned to computer science. Not only did I learn to write computer programs, and assemble/disassemble a pc, but I also learned how to write the code to create my own web pages. Certified web master here…

These skills have not helped me in the real world, but they have aided me in my entrepreneurial adventures on my blog and in my Etsy shop. It took me a while to earn my degree and my certification, as I was working full-time, and raising 3 children solo, but I made it. I graduated in 2012 as one of the top in my class, and I am able to say that I did it all on my own. I set a goal and I stuck with it to the end. I am proud of myself and my accomplishments.

If you are interested in continuing your education, visit FAFSA on the web and go through the prompts. It’s a super easy process. You will be glad that you did!

Do you know of any other programs that could help others looking to better their future? I would love to hear about them…

I did that too! I went back to school almost three years ago. I started by getting a CNA certificate while I was working on my prerequisites for the nursing program. It’s been slow going since like you I have children and I was trying to work and go to school, but on the 25th I will start Anatomy and Physiology I and after that A&P II, my last two required classes before applying for the nursing program. Then it’s another long two years (or just one if I just get an LPN instead of RN). Then I’ll be ready to retire!
